Hotel price dropped after you booked? How to rebook and pay less
Last updated 21 September 2026
Hotel rates fluctuate all the time, and the price you booked is often not the lowest you'll see. If your booking has free cancellation, you can switch to a cheaper rate without losing your room.
Can you rebook a hotel if the price drops?
Yes, if your booking has free cancellation. Find the same room, dates and guests at a lower price, book that rate first, then cancel your original before its cancellation deadline. Only cancel once the new booking is confirmed, and check that the cheaper rate is really like for like: same room type, taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms.
How to rebook a hotel without losing your room
- Find your cancellation deadline. It's in your confirmation email, usually as a date and time in the hotel's local time. Once it passes, cancelling may cost you.
- Search again with the same details. Use the same dates, number of guests, room type and currency, so the prices are comparable.
- Compare like for like. Use the checklist below before you decide the new price is better.
- Book the cheaper rate first. Don't cancel yet. If the new booking fails or the room sells out, you still have your original.
- Cancel the original before its deadline. Use the cancellation link in your confirmation email and keep the cancellation confirmation.
- Keep both confirmations until your stay. Note the new booking's own cancellation terms and deadline.
Booked directly with the hotel? It's worth asking them to match the lower price before you switch. They don't have to, but it can save you the hassle.
What to compare before you switch
- Room and bed type. A twin and a double, or a standard and an accessible room, can be priced differently, so a lower price may be for a different room.
- Dates and guests. Check the number of adults and any children's ages the site asks for.
- Taxes and fees. Some sites show prices with taxes and some without, and local taxes paid at the hotel may not be in either.
- Breakfast and extras. Room-only and breakfast-included rates can look alike.
- Cancellation terms. Is the new rate refundable, and until when? Cheaper rates are often less flexible.
- Payment. Pay now or pay at the hotel, and when your card is charged.
- Points and perks. Loyalty points, member benefits or vouchers you would lose by switching.
- Currency. A price in another currency can cost more once your card adds its own fees.
When rebooking isn't worth it
- The new rate can't be cancelled and your plans might change.
- The saving is small compared with the points, perks or time you would lose.
- The rooms aren't really the same.
- Your original cancellation deadline has passed, so cancelling would cost you.
How often should you check?
Rates change with demand, so there's no single best day to look. Check when you book, then more often as your deadline approaches. That's when a cheaper rate is still worth switching to.
